Joe Biden arrives in France for D-Day anniversary and democracy speech
On Wednesday, President Joe Biden landed in France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day on a trip aimed at emphasizing his commitment to US allies in Europe and contrasting his vision of democracy with that of his 2024 political opponent, Donald Trump.
Biden plans to spend five days in France, participating in D-Day celebrations in Normandy, where US and allied forces stormed French beaches in an attack that contributed to defeating Nazi Germany in World War II. Additionally, he will deliver a high-profile speech and engage in a formal state visit with President Emmanuel Macron.
While in Normandy, Biden will talk with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky about the war effort to repel Russian invaders, as stated by White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan to reporters aboard the presidential flight to Paris.
Sullivan said that Biden will focus his remarks in Normandy, both on Thursday at the formal 80th-anniversary ceremony and Friday at the famed Pointe du Hoc cliffs, on the dangers of isolationism and the necessity to stand up to dictators.
Biden will draw a connection from World War Two through the Cold War and the creation of the NATO alliance to today, highlighting the current situation “where we face once again war in Europe, where NATO has rallied to defend freedom and sovereignty.”
In what promises to be an emotional moment, Biden will personally meet the aged veterans who participated in the D-Day invasion. White House national security spokesperson John Kirby stated that Biden and Macron would discuss the potential use of some $300 billion in frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine during the visit.
In November, Biden, a Democrat, is running for re-election against Trump, a Republican. He has made preserving and strengthening US democracy a key part of his campaign, particularly in the aftermath of Trump’s chaotic four years in office.
Refusing to accept the results of the 2020 election, Trump sparked a deadly attack on the US Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021. He has vowed to target political opponents, deport immigrants, and punish whistleblowers in a potential second term.
Trump’s threats to abandon NATO allies if they do not increase their defense spending have raised concerns that he might withdraw the United States from the alliance altogether if re-elected president.
My training data only includes information up until January 2022, and I cannot provide real-time updates. Up until that time, Hamas was considered a terrorist organization by several countries and international organizations, including the United States, Israel, the European Union, and others.
The International Criminal Court has charged Netanyahu with war crimes, and some international allies and left-leaning voters in the United States are urging Biden to halt the flow of US military aid to Israel. In the November election, this issue could potentially damage Biden’s standing in key states, including Michigan.
The D-Day commemorations occur against the backdrop of a modern conflict in Europe, specifically Russia’s more than 2-year war with Ukraine.
During a political fundraiser before his trip, Biden described the D-Day invasion as “one of the most crucial moments in the history of defending freedom and democracy worldwide” and emphasized that the sacrifices made on that day must not be forgotten.
