French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin reported that at least 12 migrants died on Tuesday when their boat capsized while crossing the Channel to Britain. He added that rescue operations are currently underway to locate the missing individuals.

In response to the severity of the situation, Darmanin announced he would travel to the site near Boulogne-sur-Mer later in the afternoon.

Both the British and French governments have prioritized tackling illegal immigration. According to UK government figures, more than 2,000 people have arrived in Britain on small boats over the past seven days.

Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to work more closely together to dismantle migrant smuggling routes.

The Channel, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes with strong currents, makes crossing on small boats dangerous. In August, difficulties encountered by a boat carrying migrants resulted in the deaths of two people.
