35 killed as driver targets crowd in rage over divorce settlement in China
At least 35 people were killed and many more injured when a man allegedly drove his car into a crowd outside a sports center in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, China.
The attack occurred on Monday night, targeting individuals exercising near the facility, according to the Daily Mail.
Police apprehended the 62-year-old suspect, identified as Fan, who reportedly carried out the attack out of frustration over a divorce property dispute. Fan tried to escape but fell into a coma due to self-inflicted injuries.
Social media footage showed people lying on the ground while bystanders helped the wounded. Witnesses stated that the car sped around the track, hitting people in multiple directions.
Many of the victims were middle-aged or elderly, and local hospitals received numerous casualties, though exact numbers were not disclosed.
Chinese authorities censored the incident as the Zhuhai Airshow was ongoing, limiting the information available and filtering posts on platforms like Weibo to control public reaction.
The sports center, which regularly attracts hundreds of fitness enthusiasts, announced its temporary closure following the tragedy.
