Former Commons speaker Boothroyd passes away at age 93

The former speaker of the Commons, Baroness Boothroyd, passed away at the age of 93, according to a statement from the current speaker, Lindsay Hoyle.

She was “one of a kind”, Hoyle says. “Not only was Betty Boothroyd an inspiring woman, but she was also an inspirational politician, and someone I was proud to call my friend.”

The statement continues: “To be the first woman speaker was truly ground-breaking and Betty certainly broke that glass ceiling with panache.”

The Good Friday Accord, which you could still hear references to today, happened during Boothroyd’s eight years in Westminster.

A popular referendum in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland authorized the signing of this historic peace agreement in 1998.
