Six policemen were arrested for inadvertently killing a civilian and injuring two others by firing on suspicion of involvement in a robbery in Korangi Industrial Area, Karachi.
Police initially claimed that one civilian was killed and several others were injured in the encounter during a robbery in Mehran Town.
They said that the police team reached the spot after which 6 to 7 robbers and police exchanged fire and one civilian was killed and two others were injured.
He said the man killed in the firing was identified as Attaullah and the injured included 35-year-old Khizr and 23-year-old Shehzad.
According to the report, the dead and injured citizens had thrown their valuables in the bushes so that they would not fall into the hands of robbers.
When the police team reached there, the citizens were picking up their belongings from the bushes, when the policemen opened fire on them, thinking that they were robbers, as a result of which one civilian was killed and two others were injured.
The higher authorities had ordered a transparent inquiry to ascertain the truth of the claims of the relatives of the victims.
Landhi Superintendent of Police (SP) Shah Nawaz Chachar, who inquired into the incident, told Dawn that a preliminary investigation had revealed that policemen were responsible for the unfortunate incident.
The SP said that the police helpline 15 helpline had received information about the incident of robbery according to which the police party had reached the spot but the accused managed to escape on time.
