CAA issues fresh travel advisory amid new Covid-19 variant threat

After Pakistan imposed travel restrictions on six African countries and Hong Kong, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a fresh travel advisory for Category C countries after the emergence of a new strain called Omicron.

“Consequent to [the] emergence of Omicron corona variant in South Africa and its spread to adjoining regions following countries have also been included in Cat C and [a] complete ban has been imposed on direct/indirect bound travel from these countries with immediate effect,” said the CAA in its statement on Twitter.

The CAA has added South Africa, Hong Kong, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini and Botswana to the fresh travel advisory.

“Pakistanis passengers, travelling from these countries in [an] extreme emergency, would only be allowed after obtaining exemptions and following health/testing protocols,” it added.

Covid-19 vaccination certificates, a negative PCR test report conducted 72 hours before boarding will be compulsory, according to the new travel advisory.

However, to facilitate stranded Pakistanis, falling under the category, can return home until December 5 without exemption, confirmed the CAA but added that the health and testing protocols would remain applicable.

In light of the rising cases of new Covid-19 variant emerging from South Africa, Pakistan on Sunday imposed travel restrictions on as many as six African countries and Hongkong under safety preemptive measures.
