Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq is expected to officially file his paperwork for the head coaching position today.

Misbah has emerged as the leading candidate for the job even since he was made the camp commandant of the team’s ongoing training camp.

He is also expected to land the chief selector’s role, but surprisingly he had waited until the last day to formally apply for the job.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had set August 26 as the deadline for the filing of paperwork for all the vacancies.

Once officially in the running, Misbah is expected to be offered a three-year contract, just like his predecessor Mickey Arthur was.

Upon filing his papers, according to the reports, he would immediately resign from the PCB’s cricket committee, of which he is also a member.

Misbah’s first official assignment would be to oversee the team during its upcoming home series against Sri Lanka.

Veteran wicket keeper-batsman Kamran Akmal has backed his former captain Misbah-ul-Haq for Pakistan cricket team’s vacant head coaching position, saying that the man from Mianwali would be “an excellent choice”.

Akmal said that “Pakistan cricket has deteriorated a lot, and in these circumstances a new team management was necessary.”

He said that the team did not achieve anything major under the former Mickey Arthur-led management, except for the Champions Trophy as he endorsed Misbah’s candidacy for the job.

He said the PCB’s decision to appoint a new set of coaches was the right call, adding that “whoever comes in charge now will be better for national cricket.”
