The Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation SIUT said in an explanatory statement today that it conducted an internal inquiry regarding Dr Furqan-ul-Haq, who reportedly died due to lack of adequate medical attention.

SIUT spokesperson said that the former practitioner of the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) died of coronavirus and it emerged that he was not admitted due to lack of medical facilities. He said that there was no record of Dr Furqan arriving at the institute’s emergency department and the reception. The spokesperson said that the SIUT has questioned its senior staff members in relation to the matter, adding that even security footage did not provide any evidence in this regard.

Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Law & Environment and Spokesman Sindh Government Murtaza Wahab said that notification has been issued to inquire into the causes which led to the unfortunate death of Dr Furqan.

“Committee has been directed to complete inquiry & submit report within 24 hours.” the advisor added.

Dr Furqan who recently retired from the Karachi Institute of Heart Disease, died of the coronavirus.

Dr. Qaiser Sajjad, Secretary General, Pakistan Medical Association said that Dr. Furqan having severe difficulty in breathing on Saturday. Despite visiting various hospitals all day on Sunday, Dr. Furqan did not get a ventilator anywhere. Dr. Furqan had recorded his voice on his mobile in which he was asking the ambulance driver to arrange a ventilator but he could not make it, Dr. Furqan passed away at 4 pm on Sunday.

On the tragic death of the doctor, Miran Yousuf, Media Coordinator to the Provincial Health Minister, said, “Ventilators and beds are available at Civil Hospital Karachi and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, we have started an inquiry into the incident.

Note that Dr. Furqan was the third doctor who died of Coronavirus in the city of Quaid earlier Dr. Abdul Qadir Soomro and Dr. Zubeida Sattar have also succumbed to the deadly virus.

A senior official lamented that this is the situation in the country’s largest city where even a doctor does not have access to a ventilator and isolation ward.

He said that Pakistan Medical Association and other doctors were constantly warning the authorities to impose strict lockdown to stop the spread of the virus as otherwise the entire health system would be destroyed.
