The rest of the villagers did not object to the atrocities committed against the monkeys.

According to Indian media, the villagers said that they took this step to teach a lesson to other monkeys and to scare them. Later, the police arrested three persons involved in the incident under Section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act for hunting wild animals and the case was registered.

Earlier this month, the monkey of Kanpur Zoo in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was sentenced to life in prison.

Kalua was a pet monkey of a local occultist, who would regularly give the monkey liquor to drink. Over a period of time, the monkey developed an addiction to it.

When the occultist died, Kalua stopped getting liquor on a regular basis and became aggressive.

He even went on a biting spree and created terror in Mirzapur, and subsequently, forest and zoo teams were called in to catch the monkey.

After several efforts, Kalua was caught and brought to the Kanpur zoo. Kanpur Zoo doctor Mohammad Nasir said “We kept him in isolation for some months and then shifted him to a separate cage. There has been no change in his behaviour and he remains as aggressive as he was. It has been three years since he was brought here, but now it has been decided that he will remain in captivity all his life.”
