Sindh Governor Imran Ismail chaired a high-level meeting regarding the power supply situation in Karachi in which the members of the Assembly demanded to control the power supply through NEPRA.

Presiding over the meeting, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail said that K Electric was responsible for uninterrupted power supply in Karachi and any negligence could not be tolerated.

Imran Ismail also said that K Electric had claimed to end unannounced load shedding within 48 hours which was not fulfilled.

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail further said that unannounced load shedding is tantamount to injustice to the citizens, it should end immediately while the federal government is providing additional gas to K Electric.

On this occasion, Federal Minister Omar Ayub Khan said that we are supplying 800 MW instead of 650 MW to K Electric, besides providing gas from 250 to 280 MMCFD instead of 190 MMCFD.

The members of the assembly also expressed annoyance over the performance of K Electric in the meeting and said that the tariff of K Electric should not be increased until the performance of K Electric is improved.

Members of the Assembly said that charges for higher power consumption are less in the world but here on the contrary, why to increase tariffs on surplus while announced and unannounced load shedding has been increased across the city.

The MPAs also said that due to Coronavirus, cinemas, markets and other power utilities are closed, yet load shedding is beyond comprehension, whereas in areas where there was zero load shedding, it is now 2 to 3 hours of load shedding has started.

During the meeting, the MPAs complained that K Electric delays meter reading which leads to an increase in units while K Electric did not reduce its tariff despite the reduction in petrol prices. Overbilling has become common which has upset the citizens.

Members of the Assembly said that despite the exorbitant increase in load shedding, the huge amount of bills are being sent. K Electric has not fulfilled any of its promises in the last 10 years.

The MPAs further said that K-Electric has failed miserably in the suburbs, the people cannot be left helpless and will protest against the performance of K-Electric at every forum.
