Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking at a ceremony marking a major victory of the Turkish army nearly a thousand years ago, said that Turkey will take whatever belongs to it in the Mediterranean, as well as Aegean and the Black Sea.

According to the details, Erdogan said in a ceremony held on Wednesday on the occasion of the 949th anniversary of the battle of Manzikert in the eastern Turkish city of Mus that Turkey has nothing to do with any other country’s territory, sovereignty or interests but Whatever is ours, we will not make any concessions on that.

Referring to the dispute with Greece over Turkey’s rights to maritime territory and energy resources, Erdogan said that Turkey urges everyone to refrain from taking wrong steps that could lead to disaster.

He said that even today, the incompetent people of Byzantine heritage, relying on the support of Europe, commit injustice and piracy, which shows that they have failed to learn from history.

He made the remarks following a major discovery of natural gas in Turkey’s Black Sea and the ongoing dispute with Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Erdogan announced on Friday that Turkey had discovered 320 billion cubic meters of natural gas after his ship Fatih, which had been digging off the Black Sea coast since July 20.

The ceremony that Erdogan addressed was actually held on August 26, 1071, to commemorate the victory of Selcuk Sultan Alp Arslan in eastern Turkey, and after this victory, the decline of the Byzantine Empire accelerated and more Turkish settlements were formed against which the path to Ottoman and modern-day Turkey was paved.

A request for mediation in the Mediterranean dispute was made during a meeting with German Foreign Minister Heiko Moss on Tuesday, and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu agreed to join the negotiating process, but he spoke of Greek “lawlessness” and tensions in the region. He also objected to the increase.

Turkey also protested against Greece’s blocking of Turkey from exploring for energy and called on the European Union to help.

Prior to Mus’s visit, Turkey and later Greece had issued conflicting warnings about military exercises in the Mediterranean.

Turkey has consistently opposed Greece’s efforts to designate small islands near the Turkish coast as a special economic zone because Turkey, which has the longest coastline in the Mediterranean, believes it is in its best interests.

Turkey has also said that energy resources near Cyprus should be fairly shared jointly between the Turkish Petroleum Licensing Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Greek Cypriot administration in southern Cyprus.

Erdogan said that the only solution to the conflict lies in dialogue and negotiations and called on Greece to respect Turkey’s rights.
