Chairman NDMA Lt. Gen. Muhammad Afzal said that they are working out a strategy for rains in Karachi till August and September.
He said in a press conference on Karachi that he regretted the losses in the city. Karachi is working on a strategy for rains in August and September.
The chairman said that FWO has also reached Karachi. The purpose of formulating the strategy is to provide relief to Karachi in the coming season.
Lt. Gen. Muhammad Afzal said that one system of heavy rains will enter Karachi from August 7 to 10. Another system will reach Karachi on August 15 with a 40% chance of rain.
He said that in recent days, Karachi has received up to 83 mm of rain in one hour.
Chairman NDMA said that 20,000 tons of solid waste is generated in Karachi every day. Solid waste is beneficial all over the world but it is a hassle for us.
Lt. Gen. Muhammad Afzal said that one of the problems in Karachi is the lack of separate water and sewerage system. We will provide assistance to various departments in this regard. A consensus will need to be reached by bringing all partners together.
“The FWO has been given large areas with large drains,” he said.
We are trying to avoid earlier losses in the weather systems coming August 7-8 and 15, he added.
He added, I have had three meetings with the Chief Minister of Sindh and two with the Governor of Sindh.
Responding to a question, Lt. Gen. Muhammad Afzal said that the number of deaths due to Coronavirus today is very low but all are requested to follow the SOPs. Take precautions regarding COVID-19 during Eid and Muharram.
