Lahore CCPO Omar Sheikh is facing severe criticism for making a controversial statement regarding Lahore motorway gang-rape victim.

Two ‘robbers’ allegedly raped a woman while she was waiting for help after a malfunction in her car on the motorway.

Talking to a private TV channel, the CCPO Lahore said that the woman left from Defense at 12:30 pm to go to Gujranwala.

“I am surprised that she is the mother of three children and the only driver she should take the GT instead of motorway,” he said.

CCPO Lahore is being sharply criticized for criticizing the victim for taking the wrong path.

Federal Minister for Human Rights Shirin Mazari termed the CCPO’s statement as unacceptable and said, “For an officer to effectively blame a woman for being gang raped by saying she should have taken the GT Road or question as to why she went out in the night with her children is unacceptable & have taken up this issue. Nothing can ever rationalise the crime of rape. That’s it.”

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz has also condemned the comment and said in a message on the social networking site Twitter, “The tragic rape incident on motorway is as traumatising & heart-rending for me as it is for the entire nation. Such incidents are indicative of a deeper malaise that warrant a national response so as to put an end to the curse that stems from a culture that encourages impunity.”

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Accountability Shehzad Akbar termed the incident as unfortunate and said that such incidents cannot be tolerated.

Shehzad Akbar said that a controversy has been raised over his statement and it is the responsibility of the government to provide security to the people and make highways and areas safe.

On the occasion, CCPO Lahore Omar Sheikh said that we are working on these four things with the help of foot tracking, geo-fencing, DNA samples and CCTV cameras.

Defending his controversial statement regarding the woman, Omar Sheikh said, “I have tried to send a message to the general public that our society is not like that, so we should be careful.

Speaking to the media outside his office, the CCPO said that the purpose of advising the woman to take GT Road was not to blame her but to show that our society is such that you should be careful.

He said that the woman’s husband and family are from France and she had the French atmosphere in her mind because of which she went out of the house at night, she was thinking that our society is safe in the same way.

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Omar said the CCPO did not violate the law, which would lead to legal action against him, but his statement was unnecessary.
