The newly appointed Inspector General of the Punjab police, Inam Ghani on Thursday claimed to have evidence that will lead to the culprits of the infamous motorway robbery and gang rape case.

He also shared with the media that 20 police teams are working on the case and are being overseen by a deputy inspector general and that the victim had provided ages and other identifying features of the culprits.

“We have done great work in the motorway rape case, and have also identified the village from which the suspects were from,” the IG told the media.

The police team also carried out geofencing in the area where the sad incident occurred and are waiting for the reports.

He also added that the police had got a very good clue which will directly lead to the culprits, however, at the moment it cannot be shared with the media.

According to Ghani, the police have recovered the complete voter list and other records from the National Database and Registration Authority of the area the culprits are believed to be based.

The Punjab police IG shared that the police teams are working to trace the profiles of people who fit the description. According to him, the police have narrowed down the list of suspects to 70 people who fall in the same age limit as the culprits and have a past criminal record.

IG Ghani also shared that the woman’s children, who witnessed the incident are now with the family and are offered all kinds of support.

PML-N assures family of support

Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz leader, Shehbaz Sharif has assured the family of his support till ‘justice is served.’

Condemning the infamous incident, he said that the assault of a woman traveling with her children is highly regrettable. He also urged the government to investigate the case using the latest techniques like the ones used in the Zainab case so that the culprits are taken behind the bars.

“This is a matter of national embarrassment and evidence of a completely broken legal system,” he wrote on Twitter.

Lahore CCPO to lead the investigations

Soon after the news broke out, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s special assistant Shehbaz Gill said that on the directives of Chief Minister Punjab, Usman Buzdar Lahore Capital City Police Officer, Umar Sheikh will lead the investigation.

“CCTV footage and DNA matching techniques are used in the probe to catch the culprits,” said Gill. He added that around 12 suspects have been arrested.

Gang rape of a woman on the motorway

On Tuesday, it was reported that two robbers have gang rapped a mother of two on the Lahore- Islamabad motorway. The woman, along with her two children, was driving to Gujranwala in her car when she was forced to stop at the Gujjarpura section of the motorway after running out of fuel. She immediately called a relative and sent him her location. He asked her to also dial the Motorway Police helpline 130 from which she reportedly received no response.

In the meantime, two robbers approached the car, broke the window, and took the woman and her children to nearby bushes where they raped her repeatedly in front of the children. They also snatched her purse carrying Rs100, 000 in cash, one bracelet, car registration papers, and three ATM cards.
