Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has expressed deep sorrow over the severe earthquake in Izmir city on Turkey’s Aegean coast.
In his tweet, the foreign minister wrote, “Prayers for our Turkish brothers and sisters affected by the terrible earthquake in #Izmir. Pakistan stands by Turkey in support and solidarity.”
He vowed that Pakistan will always stand with his brotherly country through ups and downs.

Earlier, in a statement, the Foreign Office spokesman expressed deep grieve and lament over the devastation caused by the tragic incident in Turkey.
The Foreign Office spokesman said, “Extremely anguished by news of the earthquake in Izmir, #Turkey, and people reportedly trapped in demolished buildings. Like always, people of Pakistan are in strong solidarity with their Turkish brethren. Our best wishes and prayers!.”

A strong earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale had been felt in Turkey.
The epicentre was reported below the Aegean coast in Turkey, however; no tsunami alert was issued.
According to the US Geological Survey, an earthquake measuring 17 on the Richter scale struck 17 kilometres off the coast of the western Turkish province of Izmir.
However, no casualties were reported in the latest reports from Turkey, but images from Izmir show buildings collapsing in the aftermath of the quake.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake affected Greece and Crete.
Furthermore, frightened by the tremors, people took to the streets in a state of fear and chaos.
