India: COVID Positive I-T Officer Convicted For Corruption Hangs Self

A 45-year-old COVID-19 positive income tax (I-T) department officer convicted in a corruption case hanged self and died on Monday morning in a Jaipur hospital.

According to Abhijeet Singh, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), East,  “The deceased, a native of Kota, was 45. He was convicted in a corruption case and was sent to Jaipur central jail on January 22, three days ago by a local court.”

He further said that the officer tested positive for COVID-19 before his admission in the Jaipur Central Jail.

“After the results of Covid report, the deceased was admitted in a ward on the sixth floor of the RUHS hospital, a dedicated covid care centre. Initial inquiry reveals that he was alone in his ward and around 4 am on Monday morning, the security guards had seen the man on his bed in the ward. Later, when the guards came again, the man was found dead after which the security guard informed the RUHS management, who later informed the Pratap Nagar police,” the DCP East said.

The Officer died during judicial custody, the police arrived the scene along with a sub-divisional magistrate.

The family members of the I-T Officer have been informed and the body of the deceased has been kept in the morgue for autopsy.

“As of now the reason behind the suicide is unknown,” said DCP East.

Note that the deceased posted as an inspector in I-T department in Jhalawar district in December 2016, while taking bribe apprehended red-handed by a team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). CBI also discovered new currency notes worth 24 lakh during searches at his house.

According to the official statement released by CBI, “A case was registered U/s 7 of PC Act, 1988 against Income Tax Officer, Jhalawar on a complaint. It was alleged in the complaint that the Income Tax Officer demanded a bribe of one lakh from the complainant for not imposing penalty due in the scrutiny of his income for the assessment year of 2014-15.”
