Joe Biden Signs Executive Order to end Trump’s Ban on Muslims
The newly elected President of the United States (US) has signed an executive order ending the Muslims Travel Ban that was imposed by Trump Administration.
Biden, on his first day at office; reversed multiple immigration policies that formed the cornerstone of his predecessor’s time in the White House.
Biden signed executive order ending the travel ban on citizens from more than a dozen countries, including Eritrea, Yemen, Nigeria and Sudan.
The Muslims Travel Ban was imposed by former President Donald Trump when he first entered office.
The US President has directed the State Department to restart visa processing for individuals from the affected countries and to develop ways to address the harm caused to those who were prevented from coming to America because of the ban.
Effected in 2017 during Donald Trump’s first week in office, the Muslim Ban initially restricted travel from seven Muslim-majority nations: Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya and Yemen.
Moreover, the new US President Joe Biden has also halted construction of Trump’s border wall with neighbor Mexico.
The order includes an immediate termination of the national emergency declaration that allowed the former administration to redirect billions of dollars to the wall.
Muslims also praised Joe Biden for taking this initiative and expressed a sense of relief. The San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said this reversal by the Biden administration is the culmination of years of work by activists and organizers.
Zahra Billoo, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, San Francisco Bay Area Office, said that, “President Biden making repealing the Muslim ban a day one priority communicates to American Muslims that they are being heard that their concerns are relevant to this administration and that we can turn to this administration to fulfill its promises.”
