An application was filed in the Lahore High Court for banning all social media applications including Bigo, TikTok and Likee.

Waqas Anwar Gujjar Advocate filed a petition in the High Court in which the owners of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Bigo, TikTok and Likee have been made parties.

The petition contends that youngsters are wasting their time through Bigo, TikTok, Likee and other social media applications, while all social media applications, promote nudity, obscenity and immorality.

The petitioner said that Pakistan is an Islamic country and the state has a responsibility to promote Islamic customs. Social media applications are turning the youth towards selfishness, while Bigo and other social media applications are promoting homosexuality and bigotry.

The petition filed in the High Court further said that many youths have been killed while making videos for tick talk in the last two years, adding that petitions have been filed with other departments including PTA for banning Tiktok, Likee, Bigo.

The petition asks the court to ban all social media apps, including Bigo, Likee and TikTok, and to enact legislation to monitor social media applications.

It should be noted that in the past also applications have been filed on various platforms for banning social media applications, especially TikTok.

In early December last year, the technology companies wrote a letter to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, asking for his help in ensuring significant changes in the newly approved social media rules, which led to the establishment of these social media companies in Pakistan. It has become ‘extremely difficult’ to maintain services and platforms.

‘Removal and Blocking Illicit Online Content (Procedure, Oversight and Safeguards) Rules 2020’ were published in the Official Gazette under the Prevention of Electronic Crime 2016 (PICA).
