Driving on the roads of the big cities is becoming difficult day by day as the number of vehicles are rising across Pakistan. As a result of the growing population, there has been an increase in the number of reckless drivers that endanger the safety of everyone on the road.
Inspector General (IG) Islamabad, Qazi Jameel-ur-Rehman has taken the issue into consideration and requested the concerned authorities to make stricter driving tests to ensure maximum safety on the roads.
IG Islamabad visited the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) Headquarters, where he was briefed by authorities on the drivers’ licence issuance process and the tests that are held at the headquarters as part of the issuance process.
Senior Superintendent of ITP, Syed Karar Hussain, told IG Islamabad during his visit that more than 36,000 motorists have been fined for violating traffic rules.
He further added that various steps are being taken to ensure the safety and to facilitate the public, which includes developing a better e-challan system and driver’s licence issuance, traffic education and distribution of free helmets among the motorcyclists.
He stated that the driving test should be more comprehensive, and that driving ability should not be tested exclusively on the essentials such as knowing road signs, being able to reverse a car, utilizing indicators, or wearing a seatbelt.
He stated that the driving exam is more of a formality than a test and that it should be far more difficult for an applicant, with harsher test modules and a more thorough evaluation of the candidates.
