Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered the proper agencies, including the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), to stay on high alert with rapid emergency reaction measures to be ready in the viewpoint of heavy monsoon rains expected to remain in the days ahead.

In a tweet on Wednesday after heavy rains affected urban flooding in Islamabad and killed two people, the PM also demanded the people stay vigilant and take extraordinary care.

The Federal Capital woke up to heavy rains today that inflicted chaos in the twin cities, pressing the authorities to seek the military’s support in saving attempts.

Whereas Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat stated that a cloudburst has sparked flooding, the Pakistan Meteorological Department challenged the statement.

“It is to clarify that weather system was forecasted earlier vide weather advisory issued by PMD on 26th July 2021 and was disseminated to NDMA and print and electronic media. This was extensive heavy rainfall and cannot be termed as a cloud burst,” the PMD statement said.

The clarification was later retweeted by Shafqaat.

Pak Army backs civil administration

Pakistan Army troops have begun assistance and rescue attempts to support the civil administration.

Whereas heavy rains have triggered water levels to rise in Nullah Lai in Rawalpindi and water buildup in the E-11 sector of the federal capital, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

On the contrary army, troops are engaged in helping civil administration in saving and relief efforts, it further stated.

Furthermore, it said that emergency plans were in order to meet any flood condition.
