Dispelling the impression of an impasse between the government and opposition parties over the appointment of members of the Election Commission of Pakistan, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said the premier would soon consult leader of the opposition on the issue.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the information minister said that Prime Minister Imran Khan would consult the Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on the issue in accordance with the Constitution.

“A strong election commission enjoying confidence of all the political parties is in the interest of the country,” he maintained.

Fawad said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has been struggling for a transparent electoral system.

The government, he said, also wanted to move forward with an open heart on electoral reforms and on laws relating to the National Accountability Bureau.

“We want a consensus in the Parliament on major issues. Stability of the political system lies in the respect for the Constitution”, remarked Chaudhry Fawad.

A day earlier, after the PTI swept polls in Azad Jammu and Kashmir Fawad had advised Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz to “quit their party positions in the wake of humiliating defeat in the AJK Legislative Assembly elections”.

“If both Bilawal and Maryam have any moral courage, they should accept responsibility for the drubbing at the hands of PTI and better gracefully resign to make way for the fresh leadership,” he said addressing a news conference along with Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Ali Amin Gandapur.

The minister said PTI had got a massive mandate in the July 25 AJK elections, which would have a far reaching consequences and impact for the region. He congratulated Ali Amin Gandpur on the party’s outright win.
