ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is a lower-middle-income country with the fifth largest population in the world and unfortunately, it is among those countries, which have the highest rate of malnutrition in women and children, a senior government official said.

Addressing the UN Food System Pre-Summit via a video link, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Syed Fakhar Imam said that this is due to the issues such as the lack of dietary diversity and unaffordability of food.

He said: “The government is committed to the realisation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to achieve zero hunger through promoting sustainable agriculture as a top priority.”

Imam said that Prime Minister Imran Khan and his team are committed towards achieving zero hunger for the local population and are determined to join “The Coalition of Action for Achieving Zero Hunger” under this UN Food System Summit initiative.

The food security and nutrition status of people is central to the government of Pakistan to ensure a healthy and economically vibrant population. It will help ensure economic growth and development, he added.
