KARACHI: Four people, including two women, died of suffocation when a fire broke out in their home at Bahadurabad in the limits of Tipu Sultan police station on Thursday.

“The victims were later identified as Sultan Mirza, 80, Shazia Mirza 72, Sabiha Mirza 78 and Akbar 45,” duty officer of the Tipu Sultan police station said.

He said that one of the victim Farhat Mirza was a retired professor from the Sindh Jinnah Medical University.

The initial investigation, he said, suggested that the incident happened due to a short circuit in which they fainted and later died.

During the rescue work, a fireman was also suffocated and was then rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Hospital; however, his condition is stated to be stable.

Moreover, Ibrahim Haidry police arrested two activists from the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP), as they tried to materialise their unlawful activities in the city.

The police also seized one kilogramme explosives material from their possession.

The culprits, identified as Ameer Zada and Taj Wali, were involved in killing of several law-enforcement personnel in the tribal areas.

Meanwhile, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) police also rounded up a target killer Sheryar from Purana Golimar area.

According to CTD, the culprit belongs to Lyari Gang War group and was involved in several incidents of target killings.

“He is the son-in-law of notorious head of Lyari Gang War, Rehman Dakait and involved in the killing of police constable Farooq and two people from a rival gang,” the CTD official said.

Nabi Bux police also arrested two dacoits, while they were trying to snatch valuables from a shopkeeper.

Moreover, the Sindh Rangers and Karachi police conducted combing operations at Sohrab Goth Kochi camp and Afghan Basti, arresting several suspicious persons.

A statement issued by the Rangers said operation was conducted to avoid any untoward incident ahead of the Muharram processions.

During the operation, police also conducted a door-to-door search operation and arrested several other persons involved in unlawful activities.
