JAKARTA: Indonesia celebrated its 76th Independence Day on Tuesday with full enthusiasm. The day is referred to as Tujuhbelas Agustus or Hari Merdeka and on this day Indonesia got independence from Dutch colonial rule since August 17, 1945.

The day observed on Tuesday under high security across the country to avoid possible disruptions, such as Covid-19 rule violations, terrorist acts or militant attacks. Roadblocks have been set up and about 300 traffic officers from the city police have been deployed to boost security.

The government hold a flag-raising ceremony in the national capital Jakarta on Tuesday morning, with limited number of attendees at the location of the event.

The event live-streamed and President Joko Widodo has called on the public to celebrate the Independence Day virtually due to the current pandemic. Limited ceremonies, festivities, flag hoisting, patriotic and cultural parades across the Indonesian nation, and Indonesian diplomatic installations abroad took place.

Indonesia Independence Day celebrations reflect its multicultural identity while also promoting solidarity within local communities — the nation’s motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” means “Unity in Diversity.” This year takes on a different meaning where communities are staying strong to protect each other and still celebrate their identity at home due to pandemic Covid-19.-Xinhua/agencies
