LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has called for the construction of parking plazas in major markets of the city, a statement said.

During a meeting with Chief Traffic Officer Muntazir Mehdi and other officers, the LCCI office-bearers said the lack of parking facilities was one of the major reasons of traffic congestion.

Mehdi urged traders to play due role for curbing the menace of encroachment. He sought suggestions from the business community for the improvement of traffic management system. The violation of traffic rules would not be tolerated, he added.

LCCI president Mian Tariq Misbah said that the construction of parking plazas should be started immediately at Mochi Gate, Kashmiri Gate, Beadon Road, Hall Road, Shahalam Gate and other markets.

Keeping the flow of traffic was a herculean task but the traffic police was managing it properly, he said, adding that liaison between police and the business community was necessary and the LCCI was playing its part.

LCCI senior vice president Muhammad Nasir Hameed Khan and vice president Tahir Manzoor Chaudhry demanded removal of illegal U-turns, cuts and parking stands on major roads of Shahalam.

They said the road from Soha Bazaar to Paniwala Talab should be declared one-way. They suggested forming a committee having due representation of the LCCI for giving suggestions to resolve the issue of encroachments.

The LCCI office-bearers demanded increase in the number of wardens in the markets during rush hours.
