Local mobiles production in Pakistan exceeds imports: Razak Dawood

Adviser to Prime Minister for Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood said that more mobiles are being manufactured than the number of imports during the first half of the year.

During January to July period, 12.27 million mobiles have neeb manufactured locally and 8.29 million mobiles were imported.

On his Twitter handle, Razak said, “At a meeting of the manufacturers of mobile phones in Pakistan yesterday. I was heartening to note that the number of mobile phones being manufactured locally has now surpassed the quantities imported. During Jan-Jul 21, 12.27 million phones were manifested locally as compared to..”

He also tweeted, “import of 8.29 million phones. I was also informed that small quantities of mobiles have now started to be exported. This is a testimony that our mobile phone manufacturing policy is on track.”

This development shows a positive uptake on Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Authorisation regulatory regime.

During the first half of the year under this regime, local manufacturing has exceeded imports. The locally manufactured smartphones numbered 12.27 million, among this around 4.87 million are 4G enabled smartphones.

The successful implementation of the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) and conductive government policies have build a favourable environment for the manufacturing of mobile devices in Pakistan.

It has also benefited Pakistan’s mobile ecosystem by eliminating the counterfeit device market, levelling the playing field for commercial enterprises, and instilling consumer trust through the establishment of standardised legal channels for all types of device imports.

It’s worth noting that Pakistan’s government implemented a comprehensive mobile manufacturing policy to encourage and attract businesses to set up shops in the country. On January 28, 2021, the PTA announced MDM Regulations in light of the policy. MDM authorization has been granted to 26 businesses so far, allowing them to manufacture mobile devices in Pakistan.
