West Indies (WI) won their first test match against Pakistan at Sabina Park. This also marks the host’s first win in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23.

WI won the toss and elected to bowl first. In the first innings, Pakistan scored 217 with the loss of all wickets. Fawad Alam was the star player as he scored 56 off 117 deliveries. Faheem Ashraf scored 44 off 66 deliveries.

On the WI side, Jason Holder and Jayden Seales took 3 wickets each.

In the reply to 217 runs by Pakistan, WI scored 253 runs, leading by only 36 runs. Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite scored 97 off 221 and Jason Holder scored 57 off 108 balls.

On the Pakistan side, Shaheen Afridi took 4 wickets while Muhammad Abbas took 3 wickets.

During the second innings, Pakistan could only score 209 for 10 wickets loss. Babar Azam scored 55 off 160 and Abid Ali scored 34 off 66.

WI’s Seales took a 5-wicket haul and Kemar Roach took 3 wickets.

Chasing the 169 runs, Roach was the strat player during the late overs in which he hit the winning runs as he scored unbeaten 30.

ICC posted a tweet saying, “West Indies win the 1st Test by just one wicket. Kemar Roach (30*) leading the hosts over the line in an epic contest.

“I just stayed positive and was just trying to take on every ball as it came,” said 34-year-old Roach.

“I was just trying to pick the gaps and run hard. Just believing and backing myself.”

Jermaine Blackwood scored 55 runs off 78 deliveries. While Shaheen took 4 wickets and Hasan Ali took 3 wickets.

Jayden Seales was named man of the match after he took 8 wickets in the match.

The next and final test match between WI and Pakistan will be played in Sabina Park, Kingston starting on August 20.
