Removal of Buzdar’s principal secretary set tongues wagging
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar’s decision to remove his principal secretary, Tahir Khurshid has set the rumour mills abuzz since Tahir was regarded as a “star bureaucrat” on whom the chief minister relied completely.
Rumors are rife that Tahir was removed due to his decision to appoint the notorious Umer Sheikh as Lahore’s capital city police officer (CCPO). Umer who was removed from his position in January had a fair share of controversies during his short term as the Lahore CCPO.
The former CCPO had also turned approver in the Ashiana case filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against Punjab’s former chief minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to sources, Buzdar had noticed Tahir Khurshid back in 2020 when he was serving as commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan. Tahir had taken great personal interest in executing development work in the most underdeveloped region of the province.
They said Tahir had half-heartedly accepted the position of the CM’s principal secretary as he was happy with his Dera Ghazi Khan assignment.
It is said the family of Buzdar also wanted to see Tahir in the commissioner office for an extended period for the better execution of the development works but the CM wanted to have him in the CM House to run the affairs of the entire province.
The sources said Tahir had not disappointed the CM and helped the provincial government function without any scandals. The CM had recently empowered him to transfer any officer in the province. However, to everyone’s surprise, Buzdar on Tuesday abruptly removed Tahir from his position.
Every government has a star bureaucrat who actually runs the entire show. In recent past officers like Azam Khan, Fawad Hasan Fawad and Nargis Sethi have been the star bureaucrats of the respective governments of Imran Khan, Nawaz Sharif, and Yousaf Raza Gilani.
Similarly, Shehbaz Sharif relied on Tauqeer Shah during his tenure while his predecessor Parvez Elahi had a favourite bureaucrat in Sikandar Sultan Raja.
