Swimmer Kiran Khan believes that Pakistan is unlikely to win any medal at Olympics soon without restructuring the sports setup in the country.

Pakistan’s medal drought at the mega-event is looking very likely to continue after the majority of the athletes failed to produce impressive performances in Tokyo.

While talking to Bol News, Khan believed the governing bodies are responsible for the dismal affairs of sports in the country, not the athletes.

“They are only looking for medal glory without assisting us [athletes],” said the swimmer. “I haven’t attended a single training camp after 2010 and they haven’t brought any coaches for anyone.”

Khan, also known as the Golden Girl, maintained that the people in charge of sports in the country do not know anything about it.

“I don’t know what Fehmida Mirza [Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination] is doing in sports,” she said. “She has no prior experience of running sports bodies.”

The seven-time international gold medalist further asked the fellow Pakistanis to not blame the athletes for not winning medals for the country.

“It’s my message [to Pakistanis] to not keep any unrealistic expectations from athletes,” she said.  “When authorities are not willing to provide any training facility and monetary allowances, you cannot compete at the highest level with the world’s best. We don’t do sports for charity.

“Authorities inform sportspersons that they won’t go abroad to train unless they qualify [for the Olympics]. That is a completely wrong approach because if you want your athletes to qualify for an event like Olympics, then you have to provide them facilities; otherwise, there is no point in expecting them to bring medals for the country.”
