Nepra initiates proceedings to determine electric vehicle tariff

KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has initiated proceedings to determine the tariff to be charged from electric vehicles by electric charging station, an official document suggests.

The National Electric Vehicle Policy provides, “Nepra shall develop a policy to enact EV tariffs and to ensure compliance with EV standards and specifications.”

“Therefore, the authority has initiated proceedings to amend the terms and conditions of the distribution companies and K-Electric Limited to include Electric Vehicle Charging Stations,” the document noted.

The authority would also determine the maximum cap for EV charging services to be provided by a station.

The Auto Industry Development Plan (AIDP 2026) enables ground for an expansionary cycle for the sector with new entrants coming in and existing players undertaking expansion.

The policy does not signify a distinction between a new entrant and an existing player making a level-playing field for all. That said, the concessions are focused on hybrids and electric vehicles.

Considering the environmental impact, the world is moving towards electric vehicles. Many countries around the world are taking initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions by introducing electric vehicles.

The government of Pakistan is also committed to control the harmful emissions; therefore, the government has recently approved an Electric Vehicle Policy.

The Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and Shell Pakistan have already deployed electric vehicle charging stations at designated locations.

The federal government plans to transform 30 per cent of vehicles plying on the road to electric vehicles by 2030, which; however, would depend much on the country’s charging infrastructure.
