KIEV: At least nine Ukrainian servicemen were killed and another 28 were wounded as a result of escalating hostilities in eastern Ukraine over the past month, Ukraine’s Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmyla Denisova said on Tuesday.

On her Facebook page, Denisova called on the international community to use all available tools to help end the hostilities and put pressure on the self-proclaimed ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’ as well as the ‘Lugansk People’s Republic’ to comply with the ceasefire.

This is the second sharp rise in hostilities in eastern Ukraine in 2021. The previous one at the beginning of the year saw fighting between the Ukrainian military and insurgents intensify despite a July 2020 ceasefire.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which began in April 2014, has claimed some 14,000 lives and left as many as 40,000 wounded.  (Xinhua)
