KARACHI: The Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) has approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), seeking a generation licence for its 300MW run-of-the-river hydel power plant to be setup on River Kunhar with a cost of $580 million.

The hydropower potential in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is very high and the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) has been working on this dimension of development for the last three decades to achieve the self-sufficiency in the power sector.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has an estimated power potential of generating nearly 30,000MW, while most of the hydropower projects under development are in public sector, the provincial government has embarked on a multipronged strategy for encouraging investment through public, private and public-private partnership sectors.

The electrical energy produced from the water resources is a green power, as it is non-polluting and renewable in nature. The hydropower development is necessary for countries such as Pakistan, where the peaking shortages, both seasonal and daily in the power generation are very high.

The total installed capacity of the hydropower stations in the country is around 6,700MW, of which 3,850MW is in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 1,699MW in Punjab, 1,039MW in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and 117MW in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Hydropower makes a significant contribution to electricity generation in Pakistan, representing around 25 per cent of the capacity and 21 per cent of generation.

The Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization is an autonomous body of the government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and responsible for fast-track development of the energy sector of the province.

PEDO is working to explore all possible energy avenues, including hydro, solar and wind energy. As the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has immense potential for the development of hydropower and so this area is being given the top priority, and the private sector investment is being encouraged.

The thermal power generation based on natural-gas or coal also comes within the purview of PEDO.
