A fish with the body of a shark and the face of a pig was dragged out of the sea by Italian navy officers who were perplexed by their unusual catch.

The fish was discovered in the waters of the Darsena Medicea marina in the town of Portoferraio on the Italian island of Elba, according to The Mirror.

The strange-looking face of the sailor who dragged it out of the sea ‘creeped them out,’ but they swiftly dismissed the chance that it was a mutant.

Instead, the fish was recognized as an angular rough shark, which may live up to 2,300 feet below the surface. It is also known as a pig-face shark.

Photos of the shark were uploaded on Facebook last Friday and quickly went viral, garnering over 500 comments and over 1,200 replies. Many people in the comments section were taken aback by the strange-looking beast, while others chastised the navy commanders, presuming that the shark had been caught on purpose.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has classified the angular rough shark as endangered (IUCN).

Despite the fact that it is endangered, Yuri Tiberto of the nearby Elba Aquarium stated the creature is not uncommon in the area.
