Sri Lanka vs South Africa: Host beats SA by 14 runs in first ODI
Opening batsman Avishka Fernando hit 118 to lead Sri Lanka to a 14-run win over South Africa in the first ODI in Colombo on Thursday.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. The hosts scored 300 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Fernando scored his third century in his ODI career.
South African opener Aiden Markram scored 96 off 90 deliveries and Rassie van der Dussen scored 59 runs off 59 balls. Despite their efforts, South Africa fell short on 286-6.
Markram and skipper Temba Bavuma put up a 106-run partnership. Bavuma got retired hurt on 38.
SA was determined to win after they had scored 155-1. However, after the skipper got retired hurt due to his hand injury after a Sri Lankanfeilder threw the ball, the victory seems difficult.
Van der Dussan put up some fight after he scored his ninth ODI half-century which included six boundaries after he was bowled by Akila Dananjaya.
SA spinner Keshav Maharaj took two wickets for just 30 runs in 10 overs.
Fernando changed the direction of the game after he reached his half-century milestone. He put up a 79-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva for the third wicket.
After scoring a century, Fernando fell to Tabriz Shamsi’s left-arm wrist-spin, having hit 10 fours and two sixes in his 115-ball knock.
Kagiso Rabada got Asalanka caught behind after the batsman’s second ODI half-century in his sixth match. Rabada took two wickets.
The second ODI is on Saturday with all the matches to be played behind closed doors at the same venue.
