Swiss cantons give away 100 bottles of wine to citizens who reach the age of 100
A Swiss canton is celebrating its people who survive to be 100 years old by giving them 100 bottles of wine.
Fribourg state bailiff Claude Freiburghaus said plans are already on to deliver a bouquet of flowers and an offer for 100 bottles of wine to a resident called Marie-Antoinette when she turns 100 on Nov 5.
Freiburghaus stated that the canton first proposed the idea in 2000 and previously gave a free armchair in exchange for the wine, but the chair was terminated in 2015 due to a lack of interest among local centenarians.
According to him, the existing program offers a charitable donation or a certificate for use at a local merchant or craftsman to residents who decline the wine offer, but the majority of 100-year-olds choose the alcoholic beverage.
“In 2020, we will commemorate 27 centenarians. Five of them chose the donation and two chose the gift certificate “Freiburghaus spoke to the daily newspaper Le Matin Dimanche.
