ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Senator Ayub Afridi resigned from his seat on Wednesday as the government set the ball rolling for bringing back Shaukat Tarin as finance minister.

Sources told Bol News that Senator Afridi, who was elected from a general seat for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has resigned so that Tarin may get elected to the upper house of parliament so that he may continue working as finance minister.

Officials, privy to the development, said that Senator Afridi will meet PM Imran Khan today to submit his resignation. They added that once Afridi resigns, he would be appointed adviser to Prime Minister on states and frontier regions.

“The president, on the advice of the prime minister, has been pleased to appoint, with immediate effect, Shaukat Fayyaz Ahmed Tarin as adviser to the prime minister on finance and revenue, with the status of [the] federal minister,” said the notification, issued by the Cabinet Division.

Tarin was appointed as the finance minister on April 17 this year, and his constitutional tenure had ended on October 16. He needed to be elected to parliament to continue in his post for longer than six months after his appointment.

The government will be hopeful of Tarin securing a comfortable win from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the PTI enjoys a majority in the province.
