LAHORE: The cash-strapped Punjab government has decided to purchase a bombproof vehicle worth around Rs140 million for the chief minister, Bol News has learnt.

The existing bombproof vehicle in CM Usman Buzdar’s fleet had recently been taken away reportedly forcibly by a powerful personality, causing the Punjab government to go for the option of purchasing a new one.

Though CM Buzdar already has 18 luxury bulletproof vehicles at his disposal, he desired to add a brand new bombproof vehicle to his fleet while taking benefit of the existing law. The CM is entitled to have a bombproof vehicle in his fleet. The Punjab government is also purchasing 36 new cars for cabinet members. These 1,800cc cars will cost another Rs150m to the public exchequer of the biggest federating unit in the country. Before that, the provincial ministers were riding 1,300cc cars as per the entitlement. In place of 1,300cc three-year-old cars, the ministers will be given 1,800cc brand new vehicles.

Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Information and Special Initiatives Hassan Khawar has admitted the development during a recent interaction with the media, saying the Punjab government had not purchased vehicles for ministers during the last three years. Without mentioning the specifications of vehicles, the Punjab government spokesman said that the cabinet members would be given new cars as per entitlement.
