KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday was informed that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has directed the provincial government to provide a requisite date and notifications necessary for the purpose of delimitation within a month for the local government elections.

A two-judge bench of SHC headed by Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh was informed by the ECP counsel that the electoral body via its October 6 judgment has directed to the Sindh government to make amendments in the Sindh local government law within a month.

The MQM Pakistan has filed a petition challenging delimitation of constituency on the basis of 2017 census results.

The ECP law officer, Abdullah Hanjrah, submitted that the ECP’s three-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja had on October 6 passed order regarding holding of local government elections in Sindh. Sindh chief secretary has been directed to provide the requisite data and notifications to carry out delimitation of constituencies within one month, he added.

The ECP law officer also filed certified copy of the ECP order which was taken on record and copies of the same was also supplied to the counsel for the petitioners.

The Sindh government law officer as well as petitioners’ counsel requested time to go through the ECP order.

Following this the court adjourned the matter for a date to be fixed by the office of the court.
