Uber – the ride-hailing application, has made up its mind to add 50,000 Teslas to its current fleet so as to switch to EVs completely by the year 2023.

The company has reportedly joined hands with the rent-a-car service, Hertz. The latter announced that it had added 100,000 EVs to its platform, yesterday. Many transportation providing companies other than Uber and Hertz are aiming to cut down the usage of CNG powered automobiles, and go completely electric by 2030.

Uber, along with Hertz has been offering discounts to drivers who don’t own a vehicle. However, they never came forward to rent out specific vehicles to captains until now. Uber captains are required to pay $334 per week in order to rent the Tesla model 3 through Hertz. Numerous discounts are being offered to them to raise awareness regarding the program, while the scheme expands across the country to fulfill Uber’s aim of acquiring 50,000 EVs.

Uber admits it is difficult to attract captains on the current rental, but since there are less maintenance and fuel costs involved, the idea could be a success.

As for drivers, they are supposed to have completed the minimum requirement of 150 trips, with rating of atleast 4.7 stars, only then they will be eligible to rent the EV. Furthermore, for recharging they will have access to Tesla’s supercharger network as well.
