KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and different District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) on Monday informed the Sindh High Court that 124 places in the city have been designated for charged parking.

The KMC and DMC in their replies filed in a petition challenging collection of charged parking fee, submitted that sections 96 and 100 of Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2013 empowered them to collect local taxes. The KMC and DMC submitted the charged parking fee was being collected under the same sections.

Various DMC in their replies submitted that the roads falling within their jurisdiction as per a notification of December 7, 2015 were transferred to KMC.

The KMC and DMCs counsel submitted that the charged parking fee was being collected to meet their expenditures as well as to maintain the roads and provide civic services to the citizens.

The traffic police of different traffic sections in their replies submitted that matter of charged parking was related to Directorate of Charged parking (KMC), therefore prayed for deleting their names as respondents from memo of the petition.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto after taking the replies of the respondents on the record adjourned further hearing in the matter till a date to be fixed by office of the court.
