Borna Gojo beat Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (7/2), 2-6, 6-2 to give Croatia the first point of their Davis Cup quarter-final clash in Turin on Monday.
The 279th-ranked Gojo overcame a hesitant start, with the 23-year-old trailing the 27th-ranked Sonego 4-1 in northern Italy, before coming back from 5-3 down to take the first set in a tie-break.
Sonego, 26, powered back in the second set but dropped serve early in the final set at 2-1, with over 30 unforced errors allowing Gojo to win in 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Italy’s top player Jannik Sinner, ranked 10th in the world, next takes on Croatia’s 30th-ranked Marin Cilic. Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli face a tough task against Croatia’s world number one doubles pairing of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic.
