LAHORE: Around 3,000 Sikh pilgrims from India have reached Pakistan, while crossing the Wagah border on Wednesday to participate in the 552nd birth anniversary celebrations of Baba Guru Nanak.

Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) chairman Dr Amir Ahmad, additional secretary Rana Shahid, deputy secretary Imran Gondal and members of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (PSGPC) welcomed the visiting pilgrims at the Wagah border.

The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi had issued around 3,000 visas to Indian Sikh pilgrims to participate in the birth anniversary celebrations of Baba Guru Nanak.

Other than India, Sikh pilgrims from various countries, including the US, Britain, Afghanistan and Canada are also due to reach Pakistan to attend the celebrations, which will continue from November 17 to 26. During the celebrations, Sikh pilgrims will also visit Gurdwara Derbar Sahib.

Speaking to newsmen at the Wagah border, leader of Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee Delhi, Sardar Balwinder Singh, said that he was delighted to cross into Pakistan, the land of their beloved Guru [Nanak].

The entire Sikh community was very excited over the opening of Kartarpur Corridor, he said.

To a question, Singh said that they were satisfied with the way Pakistan and its departments were taking care of their religious places and shrines.

ETPB chairman Amir Ahmad told newsmen that it was his department’s utmost duty to facilitate the visiting Yatrees. Following the vision and directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan, ETPB has made exemplary steps for the visiting guests regarding their residence, travel, food and security.

The central ceremony of the birthday celebration of Baba Guru Nanak would be held on November 19 at Nankana Sahib.
