KARACHI: Reacting to the demolishment of the Nasla Tower on the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, former Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar said on Friday that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement –Pakistan will file a petition in the Sindh High Court for compensation of the residents.

Speaking exclusively to Bol news, the MQM-P leader said that the Sindh government is mandated to pay the residents of Nasla Tower according to the market rates.

Expressing his reservations over the role of the federal government, the mayor said that it appears that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government is not interested in the issues of the city.

“Today Karachi is abandoned by everyone. The city doesn’t have water and security. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal Memon to complete the demolition work of Nasla Tower in one week even if it requires the assistance of 400 labourers.

Hafiz Naeem barred from speaking

Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman was also present on this occasion. When he tried to intervene, Justice Gulzar scolded him. Hafiz Naeem said he should be given some time to present his argument. To which, the chief justice said he would not give permission for any political speech.

The JI Karachi chief said the Sindh government should be ordered to pay compensation money to former residents of the building. The CJP said he had already issued an order in this regard.

“Who are you and what is your interest in the building,” asked Gulzar Ahmed. “I am a resident of the city, therefore I have come here,” he replied.

“Go out of the courtroom and do politics. You have nothing to do here. Make a speech outside of the court,” directed the top judge.
