KARACHI: Police on Saturday arrested a group of drug peddlers who took orders on phone calls in Karachi.

Police said the suspects would deliver drugs in a rickshaw pretending to be going to drop passengers at a destination. Police carried out a raid on a tip-off and arrested three suspects, including the rickshaw driver, from the Sharafi Goth area.

More than four kilogramme black hash, ice and zar farokhtagi were recovered from their possession. Police have also obtained criminal records of the suspects. They said the suspects were professional drug peddlers and had been jailed multiple times. One of the arrested suspects, Zahid was nominated in more than eight cases related to drugs in different police stations.

Proceedings against the arrested suspects are under way and they have been handed over to the investigation officials for interrogation.

The spokesperson of Malir district police said the suspects have been identified as Noor Hasan, Muhammed Bukhsh and Zahid.

On Nov 19, one alleged robber was killed and another arrested during an encounter with police near Defence Central Library in DHA Phase-II area in Karachi.

Defence police station officials had reported, just as they signaled the suspects to stop at Punjab Chowrangi, they ignored and fled. The suspects opened fire at police officials, as the latter began to follow them. The police then opened fire in response to the robbers’ attack, killing one and arresting the other, they added.
