KARACHI: Power generation went up 10.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis to reach 15,183MW during October 2021, compared with 13,767MW in October 2020, a research report by Arif Habib Limited showed.

The rise in generation was owed to higher generation from nuclear, furnace oil (FO) and wind.

Major contributors to power generation during October 2021 were regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) with 24 per cent share, hydel with 23 per cent, coal with 17 per cent, nuclear with 12 per cent, FO with 11 per cent, gas with 10 per cent, wind with 1.6 per cent and solar with 0.5 per cent of share.

During the month, nuclear power generation went up by 95 per cent, FO 8 per cent, wind 38 per cent, solar 0.2 per cent and high speed diesel (HSD) based generation went up by 8.7 per cent on a year-on-year basis.

During the month under review, fuel cost for power generation increased by 126 per cent on a year-on-year basis to reach Rs9.30/KWh mainly due to rise in FO, coal, RLNG and gas based cost of generation. In addition hydel based generation also dipped by 17 per cent year-on-year.

RLNG-based cost of generation increased by 156 per cent on a year-on-year basis to reach Rs16.75/KWh due to 125 per cent year-on-year rise in RLNG prices to Rs2,715/mmbtu ($15.78/mmbtu).

Coal-based cost of generation went up by 76 per cent year-on-year to reach Rs11.37/KWh during October 2021 due to a rise of 294 per cent in coal prices on a year-on-year basis.

Furnace oil-based cost of generation increased by 74 per cent on a year-on-year basis to reach Rs21.23/KWh. Gas-based cost of generation jumped up by 19 per cent year-on-year to reach Rs7.98/KWh. And hydel based generation decreased by 17 per cent in the month of October.
