92% Pakistanis think inflation highest in PTI’s regime: Transparency International

Transparency International (TI) released a nationwide perceptions survey on Wednesday, according to which 92% of Pakistanis believe that inflation and price hikes are the highest in the current Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s tenure as compared to previous governments.

“Compared to the three federal governments, majority of Pakistanis (92.9%) consider inflation and price hike to be highest in the current PTI government (2018-2021), compared to 4.6 % in PML N government (2013-2018) and 2.5% in PPP government (2008-2013),” said the results of the National Corruption Perception Survey (NCPS) 2021.

It added 85.9% of Pakistanis said that their “income levels rather squeezed and decreased during the last three years.”

The main reasons remained the rising inflation and unemployment, said the people in the survey and 50.6% of them blamed the government Incompetence, 23.3% said corruption, 9.6% said undue Interference of Politicians in government affairs and 16.6% said lack of implementation of policies as the main reasons behind inflation and unemployment.

A majority of Pakistanis, 66.8%, said that the present government’s accountability drive was partial. A “vast majority 85.9% of people considered federal government’s self-accountability to be unsatisfactory,” said the survey.

Pakistanis continued to believe that the corruption in the government sector was high.

The National Corruption Perception Survey 2021 revealed that the police remained the most corrupt sector, the judiciary was seen as second most corrupt, tendering and contracting third most corrupt, while health climbed to become fourth most corrupt since the last NCPS survey of 2011.

According to the citizens, the three most corrupt sectors were “police (41.4%), judiciary (17.4%) and contracting/tendering (10.3%), while contracts of roads (59.8%), cleanliness and garbage collection (13.8%), access to water (13.3%) and drainage system (13.1%) topped the list of public services for which people had to pay bribes.

“As measures to reduce corruption, 40.1% Pakistanis say increase/stringent punishments for corruption cases, 34.6% Pakistanis say accountability of public officers by expediting NAB’s handling of corruption cases, and 25.3% say [a] complete ban on those convicted in corruption from holding public office, are key to combat corruption in Pakistan,” the TI survey added.

“A significant population (81.4%) has declined that they willingly pay [a] bribe and likewise it was a clear perception that bribes are rather extorted from the public through tactics such inaction or delay, in the provision of public services.”

The TI NCPS 2021, which is the perception of the general public on important governance issues, in all four provinces from October 14, 2021, to October 27, 2021.
