In a tweet on Monday, Britain’s Defence Ministry suggested that Russia may be planning to use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine in response to a staged bogus attack on Russian troops.
It provided no evidence to back up the claim in what it called an intelligence update. Similar statements have been made by US officials.
“Such an operation could take the form of a staged attack, a staged ‘discovery’ of agents or munitions, or fabricated evidence of alleged Ukrainian planning to use such weapons,” the Twitter post said.
It stated that the Defence Ministry had found no evidence to back up Russia’s claims that Ukraine was planning to use chemical and biological weapons.
The UN said on Friday that there was no evidence that Ukraine had a biological weapons programme, while Washington and its allies accused Russia of spreading the unverified claim as a possible prelude to launching its own biological or chemical attacks.
In a press conference on Friday, US Vice President Joe Biden warned Russia that it would pay a “heavy price” if its military used chemical weapons against Ukraine.
