‘I took an oath to protect our nation and our flag once, and I still do,’ added the guy.
Last week, a garbage collector in Utah was recorded grabbing an American flag from the trash and carefully folding it when he believed no one was looking.
According to Fox 13, Don “Munch” Gardner, a Marine Corps veteran, was covertly filmed saluting the flag by Huntingdon, Utah resident Brooke Cowley.
“I was a total moron! While the kids went on an Easter egg hunt, I was cleaning our porch. Our flag and pole had broken and ripped, so I tossed them away “Cowley posted a message on Facebook. “Then I saw our ‘trash man’ stop, get out of the truck, unhook the flag, and fold it!”
Cowley said Gardner’s actions made her ashamed because she failed to properly retire the flag, especially because she is married to a veteran.
“I was very grateful at the time for what he had done and the apparent love he had for our nation and our flag! Sir, thank you for giving me a lesson I will never forget “Gardner was mentioned in her writing.
Gardner, who works eight to twelve hours a day collecting garbage cans throughout Emery and Carbon counties in Utah, told a local source that he has saved at least a dozen flags from the dump over the last 11 years. When he sees flags being tossed away, he becomes enraged.
“It’s not always a mistake. The majority of the time, it’s on purpose. I have an issue with it, so I simply pull it out and deal with it “He stated.
I took an oath to protect our nation and this flag once, and I still do,” Gardner explained. “Many individuals perished while defending and battling beneath that banner. A lot of blood has been lost for us to have the liberties we have today.
Gardner also showed how to properly dispose of an American flag. “Anybody in Emery County who knows me, get it to me if you don’t know what to do with it,” he stated. “I’ll see to it that it’s taken care of properly.”
