Newly-elected National Assembly (NA) Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Saturday nullified the approval of resignations of 123 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers by ex-deputy speaker Qasim Suri.

After taking the oath, the first ruling from the new speaker was to carry out the process again under prescribed rules. For this purpose, he ordered presenting the resignations of PTI lawmakers in the assembly secretariat again.

Notably, Qasim Suri resigned as NA deputy speaker minutes before the session to vote for the no-confidence motion against him. The NA session was to convene today at noon with the removal of Suri and the election for the new speaker on the agenda.

A notification signed by NA Secretary Tahir Hussain declared that the related seats had become vacant with effect from April 11.
