According to an official, Ukraine has launched an investigation into the alleged guilt of 500 Russian leaders including President Putin for thousands of war crimes.
Boris Johnson’s surprise visit to Kyiv on Saturday was also thanked by Ukrainian prosecutor general Iryna Venediktova in an interview with Sky News.
Johnson offered President Volodymyr Zelensky more military assistance during their private walk through central Kyiv.
While standing alongside President Poroshenko, Johnson added, “I think the Ukrainians have shown the courage of a lion, and I think you, Volodymyr, have given the roar of that lion”.
During her account of Russian invasion atrocities, Venediktova said Johnson’s visit had provided “very amazing support for us,” as she described a train stop full of fleeing civilians being attacked by Russian troops.
As the prosecutor explained in English, “Of course, what we witness on the ground in all parts of Ukraine is war crimes, crimes against humanity.”
A missile attack on the Kramatorsk station in eastern Ukraine, where officials say 52 people died, had “complete documentation,” she claimed.
For this reason the case will be included in our large profile,” Venediktova stated.
Her words: “You know that we launched 5,600 cases in Ukraine on the aforementioned war crimes” now include the names of at least “500 suspects” from the Russian government and military.
It was noted that while Putin may currently have immunity from prosecution under international law, this would not be the case indefinitely. “Vladimir Putin is the main war criminal of the twenty-first century,” the official declared.
When Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko was elected, Zelensky promised to discover and punish “everyone” involved for Russian “war crimes” in Ukraine.
It would comprise experts from both the United States and outside, along with investigators, prosecutors and judges, according to the official.
Britain has been providing technical expertise as the International Criminal Court in The Hague pursues its own investigation into the Ukraine invasion.
Ukrainian villages such as Bucha and Irpin have “permanently stained” Putin’s reputation and constitute war crimes, according to Johnson in Kyiv.
